At Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Michigan, 100 historic shipwrecks rest at the bottom of Lake Huron. And with them, in those waters, a challenge looms.

The 2025 MATE ROV World Championship takes place June 19-21, and the competition is just as deep and dynamic as ever. With elite teams from across the globe vying for victory, the stakes this year are high—not only for awards and recognition, but for legacy.

In 2024, we witnessed an unforgettable season marked by close finishes and shifting tides among powerhouses. Perhaps most notably, Jesuit High School’s bid for a perfect four-year dynasty came to an end in the EXPLORER class final, where Cabrillo College edged them out by just seven points.

But with Cabrillo College out of the running this year… will a new dynasty emerge triumphant?

 

RANGER Class: The Chase Continues

 

The RANGER class sees several returning contenders, including an active Dynasty in North Paulding High School, who will be competing with new team members this year. With championship finishes in each of the last three years—including a first-place win in 2024 and 2021 and a third-place finish in 2023—North Paulding has positioned itself as one of the most consistently dominant teams in the MATE ROV Competition. A strong performance in 2025 could further elevate their all-time Dynasty rankings.

This year also brings the return of a stand-out rookie, Fukien Secondary School. After a breakout podium debut, clenching second-place in 2024, we’re looking to see whether they can maintain momentum and prove their performance wasn’t a one-time feat.

Also returning are teams like Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School and St. Francis Catholic High School, both with opportunities to build upon their long-term competitiveness—if they can de-throne North Paulding.

 

EXPLORER Class: A Stacked Showdown

 

The EXPLORER class features a number of notable returns, including five former or current Dynasty teams:

Jesuit High School is the most dominant program in MATE history and enters 2025 after narrowly missing a fourth straight title last year. With six first-place wins over the past decade and consistent top-tier performance, Jesuit remains the team to beat—especially with the team who crushed their winning streak gone. A win this year would reignite their dynasty and affirm their place as the MATE ROV GOAT.

Memorial University Marine Institute is also back. Though their original Dynasty ended in 2019, the team has remained competitive, reaching the World Championship in 2023 and returning again this year. With multiple podium finishes during their historic run, including a first in 2016 and second in 2013 and 2015, we’re eager to see whether this team can make a return to their former glory.

Alexandria University returns for their second straight championship after missing 2023 and ending their eight-year Dynasty. Historically strong—earning a 1st place finish in 2018 and podium placements in 2017 and 2021—Alexandria is looking to restart their competitive streak in 2025.

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology also competes this year, continuing their comeback after their Dynasty period from 2013–2021. They remain one of the most consistent performers, and have their eyes on advancing to Dynasty status once more after their missed championship in 2022.

 

PIONEER Class: Legends in the Making

 

 

Though the reigning 2024 champion, Clovis Community College, has moved up to EXPLORER, the PIONEER class still has plenty of formidable contenders.

Estrella Mountain Community College enters the season with momentum: after placing 4th in 2023 and 2nd in 2024, a win in 2025 would solidify their emergence as a new Dynasty program. After three years of commendable growth and success, could this year be their biggest breakthrough yet?

Pasadena City College also returns after a strong 2024 campaign that fell just short of championship glory. Their focus this year is clear: convert strong performances into wins and establish their presence at the very top.

Plenty of emerging programs will also be looking to make their mark, however. And as we’ve seen in recent years, first-time contenders don’t have to have the advantage of wisdom to possess a thirst for winning.

 

What’s at Stake in 2025?

This year will determine the trajectory of several dynasties—both rising and established. Teams like Jesuit High School are fighting to reassert dominance. Alexandria and Memorial seek to relight the flame of legacy. North Paulding aims to build theirs higher.

But history also shows us that anything can happen. New contenders can rise to stardom. Dynasties can crumble.
