The world’s population has surpassed 8 billion people—and today’s students will shape what that means for our planet and future generations. The World of 8 Billion Student Video Contest invites middle and high school students worldwide to take on the challenge of creating a 60-second video that explains how population growth affects one of this year’s three global topics—Energy, Wetlands, or Economics—and presents a creative solution for a more sustainable future.

Competition Process

Create a 60 seconds video about human population growth that highlights one of the following global challenges: Energy, Wetlands, or Economics. All videos must include: a) how population growth impacts the issue b) at least one idea for a sustainable solution. Consider narrowing your focus by concentrating on a subtheme within your topic. Possible subthemes include:
  1. Energy - Ecosystem impacts, natural resource use, climate change, government influence, energy access, energy poverty, etc.
  2. Wetlands - Urbanization, biodiversity, climate change, ecosystem services, social/cultural value, government influence, etc.
  3. Economics - Economic development, economic growth, wealth inequality, production & consumption, resource scarcity, and government influence.

Judging Criteria

The videos will be judged by topic with winners in each global challenge area. See the World of 8 Billion Judging Rubric for more details about how the entries will be judged. Tier One: Does the video follow the guidelines? (Yes/No) - Population Connection: Does the video show how human population growth impacts the chosen global topic? (20%) - Topic Knowledge: Does the video describe what the global topic is and explain its importance? (20%) - Sustainable Solution: Is the solution connected to the global topic, sustainable, and explained in detail? (20%) - Unique/Creative: Is the video unique, creative, and original? (20%) - Production: What is the overall quality of the video production (including visual and sound elements)? (20%)
