Students competing in the WERC Environmental Design Contest are awarded over $30k in cash prizes for their solutions to engineering tasks posed by industry partners and government agencies.

The contest models an engineering Request for Proposals. Students serve as consulting engineers as they hone teamwork skills and solve challenging real-world problems. Engineering professionals judge the competition and serve as mentors through each contest stage: Technical Report, Oral Presentation, and Bench-scale Demonstration.

Students can network with experts from academia, government, and industry. The rigorous requirements develop an entrepreneurial mindset in the students and help engineering departments meet all 7 ABET benchmarks.

Each year the WERC contest provides a series of engineering design tasks for students to complete. Alternatively, students can enter the Open Task division to pose and solve their own design challenge. Teams work on their projects at their home college/university and bring finished working prototypes to the WERC contest at NMSU.
2024 Tasks to include:
- Vehicle-to-Grid Resiliency Task
- Water Reuse Task
- Produced Water-based Task
- NASA Task (TBA)
- Open Task
