The Neurological Surgery P.C. Health Science Competition (NSPC HSC), a program of the Center for Science Teaching & Learning (CSTL), is the first and only Health Science Competition in the United States. It is designed to incite interest in Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) amongst students that attend High School in Suffolk and Nassau counties, with a focus on the health science field.

This competition is a science research competition similar to the science fair. Any high school student that fits the geographic criteria is allowed to enter. Registration begins October 16th, 2019 at 12:00:00 PM EST at www.cstl.org/nspc, and teams must register by April 30th, 2020 at 12:00:00 PM EST. Teams must then fill out the proper forms that are detailed in the rules, and found under the Rules & Forms tab. Teams must show up by 9:00 am EST to the competition venue on May 27th, 2020. Late arrivals will not be allowed to compete.

Research Question: ___/10 Is there a clear and focused purpose? Does it identify a contribution to field of study? Is it testable with scientific methods? Design & Methodology: ___/15 Is there a well-designed plan with data collection methods? Are the variables and controls defined, appropriate and complete? Is scientific thinking evidenced in the methods? Execution: ___/20 Was there systematic data collection? Are the results reproducible? Was sufficient data collected to support results? Were mathematical and statistical methods employed correctly? Creativity: ___/20 Was the project demonstrably creative in the categories above? Poster: ___/10 Was the poster well organized and clear in its message? Presentation: ___/25 Were the responses clear and concise? Did the students understand the science behind their project? Was the research conducted with a level of independence? Was there a recognition of potential impacts to science and health? Did all team members contribute to and understand the project?
