North Star Math Contests are online math competitions held six times throughout the school year (October through May). Contests are offered across multiple grades — Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8, in English and French (Chinese and Turkish language tests soon to be offered). North Star combines timed competition rounds with a gamified year-round practice platform featuring adaptive problem sets, streaks, and leaderboards. In its first year, North Star has reached over 2,000 students across 130+ schools in Canada and around 10 schools in US.
Competition Process
Students take a timed online math exam through their school during a designated contest window. Schools register through a coordinator (typically a math teacher or administrator), and students participate under school supervision. Each contest consists of age-appropriate problems spanning number sense, algebra, geometry, combinatorics, and logical reasoning.Judging Criteria
Contests are scored based on correct answers submitted within the allotted time. Students are ranked within their grade division at the school, regional, and national level. A cumulative annual ranking (similar to the former Caribou Cup) recognizes sustained performance across the best contest rounds.Participate
