Schools register in the fall and coaches work with students throughout the year. Many coaches administer the School Competition, usually in January, to determine which student(s) will advance to the Chapter Competition. Between 1 and 10 students from each school advance to the local Chapter Competition, which takes place in February. Top students from each Chapter Competition advance to their State Competition, which takes place in March. Top 4 individual competitors from each State Competition receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the National Competition, which takes place in May. The National Champion is determined during the National Competition’s Countdown Round.

Sit an exam based on different topics and themes in mathematics. Each level of competition includes 4 rounds: Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown Round. Students compete in all 4 rounds to determine overall winners.

Students are scored by their performance on the various rounds of the exams.
