Help NASA learn to build on the Moon!

Can your students help determine how to use lunar regolith to create concrete and build structures on the surface of the Moon?

Competition Process

Develop your own regolith concrete mixture and design your lunar habitat!

The lunar surface is covered with a fine-grained rocky material called regolith. We can use this material to help build the infrastructure needed for future missions. This process is called In Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU). In this challenge, you will get hands-on with a lunar regolith simulant engineered in the lab to mimic the properties found on the Moon. A Program Guide walks students through a series of activities to learn about the properties of lunar regolith, develop a concrete mixture using regolith, test your concretes strength, and use what you have learned to design a lunar habitat for future long-duration missions to the surface of the Moon!

Awards & Recognition

Best In Show-Middle School

Team Award

This award counts toward these ICS Academic Badges.

Aerospace
Aerospace

The Aerospace badge is awarded to students who earn recognition in competitions that demonstrate their ability to apply science, engineering, and innovation to the challenges of flight and space exploration. The badge includes recognition from aerospace competitions covering lunar and planetary science, space systems engineering, mission concept development, and the commercialization of aerospace technology. Associated skills: Apply knowledge of the space environment to engineering and science problems; use in-situ resources to overcome mission constraints; conduct and document experiments relevant to human space exploration; translate aerospace research and technology into real-world applications.
