The International Brain Bee (IBB) is a neuroscience competition for high school students. Its purpose is to motivate young men and women to learn about the human brain, and to inspire them to enter careers in the basic and clinical brain sciences. The world needs future clinicians and researchers to treat and find cures for more than 1000 neurological and psychological disorders. The USA Brain Bee is the national competition leading to the Unternational Brain Bee.

Competition Process

The International Brain Bee is similar to a Spelling Bee, but focused on neuroscience topics. Formats vary within and among local and national Bees. Most commonly, individuals give short answers orally on stage to questions about the brain. Some Bees ask the entire group the same questions, one at a time, and they write their answers on a pad of paper. Depending on local resources, some competitions may also include neuroanatomy laboratory components, patient diagnosis components, group components, or other forms of testing. Depending on the number of competitors, some competitions may have preliminaries in written form or on the Internet.

Judging Criteria

Students are scored based on competitors' responses to questions. For complete rules, see the competition website.
