The NASA Patent Remix Challenge asks participants to explore NASA's portfolio of patented technologies at the Technology Transfer Office and propose bold, novel, and commercially viable applications that transform their defined purpose, bringing these inventions to the public with new use cases. Each submission will demonstrate how a selected NASA patent, or a suite of patents, can be transformed into a new product or business concept. Winning ideas demonstrate strong potential to pursue a research or evaluation license, and serve as the foundation for new startups, products, or partnerships. By surfacing high-potential concepts and solvers, this challenge hopes to accelerate the transition of space technology into the commercial marketplace, driving economic growth, public benefit, and continued momentum for U.S. innovation leadership.

Competition Process

As a participant, you will:
  • Select a NASA patent (or a set of related patents) from the Technology Transfer patent library at technology.nasa.gov
  • Identify a real-world problem or market need that the patent’s capabilities could address
  • Develop a product or service concept that integrates NASA technology as a core innovation
  • Use the Strategyzer Business Model Canvas (BMC) found in Resources to define your customer segments, value proposition, channels, and revenue strategy
  • Explain how your solution improves or disrupts existing market capabilities
  • Outline a realistic roadmap for product development, validation, and potential licensing.
  • Communicate the public benefit of your solution—how it contributes to everyday life, industry, or the environment.
  • Submit three components: A short paper (up to 3 pages of written content, PDF format), a Business Model Canvas (1 page, PDF format, submitted as a separate file), and a pitch video (up to 5 minutes).

Judging Criteria

Participants will submit three components: A short paper (up to 3 pages of written content, PDF format), A Business Model Canvas (1 page, PDF format, submitted as a separate file), and a pitch video (up to 5 minutes). Submissions that do not contain all three components will be disqualified. Note that the ownership and use of non-governmental intellectual property arising from this competition remains with you. All details for Intellectual Property can be found on our Eligibility Requirements page. Cross-disciplinary teams are welcome. Participants from all backgrounds are invited to apply their expertise in developing innovative solutions that leverage NASA technology. Judging Criteria Each criterion is evaluated based on five possible responses: Strongly Disagree (1 pts), Disagree (2 pts), Neither Agree Nor Disagree (3 pts), Agree (4 pts), and Strongly Agree (5 pts) Value Proposition
  1. Solution defines target customer and key underserved market needs, building toward Product-Market Fit analysis.
  2. The value delivered to customers is clearly articulated with specific products or services matching customer requirements.
Business Model Evaluation
  1. Solution establishes contributing factors to the overall cost to commercialize and considers assumptions needed to ensure future profitability.
  2. The Business Model Canvas (BMC) is complete and carefully reasoned.
  3. Solution provides market competitor analysis and defines the solution's differentiation strategy from incumbent providers.
Development Feasibility
  1. The technical choices made in the design are supported by clear explanations and logical reasoning.
  2. Solution coherently describes development process from base concept to Minimum Viable Product (MVP).
  3. There are clear examples or evidence of the team's qualifications for executing this project.
Presentation
  1. The video presentation effectively communicates the key aspects of the solution.
  2. The white paper, BMC, and video together provide a coherent and compelling overview of the proposal.
Outlines for the paper and video, as well as the template for the Business Model Canvas, are available on the website.
