The Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society for High School Journalists was started on April 10, 1926, at the University of Iowa by renowned pollster George H. Gallup and a group of high school advisers for the purpose of encouraging and recognizing individual student achievement in journalism and scholastic publication. Over 14,104 high schools in all 50 US states and 44 countries have established local chapters of the Quill and Scroll. Quill and Scroll International Honor Society for High School Students honors the best journalism by high school students, and it sponsors contests and other programs for students around the world. Quill and Scroll chapters include students who have excelled in the editorial, literary, business and multimedia departments of their high school media, and whose scholarship places them in the top levels of their respective classes.
