The Tech Challenge is a signature program of The Tech that invites teams of students in Grades 4-12 to use the engineering design process to solve a real-world problem. Participants spend months collaborating and becoming deeply engaged in the challenge while documenting their progress and designs. The program culminates in an inspiring two-day showcase in April where teams put their solutions to the test in front of judges.
The challenge takes place over several months as participants form a team, design, build and test their project. Teams document every step of their process including testing, brainstorming, and most importantly what they learn through experimentation and failure. The challenge culminates in a Final Showcase, where the teams present their project to judges in front of family, friends and community members.
Your journal is one of three areas on which your team will be judged at the showcase. It’s important to show how your team made its device and why you made the choices you did. A good way to start is by writing down what your team talks about during meetings.
The other two judging areas happen during the showcase: your team’s interview with a pair of judges and your device’s performance.
Teams will stop by three judging stations. At each station the team will meet with two judges. If a team’s device is only partially complete, team members are still encouraged to participate. Advisers do not accompany the team to the judging area.
