This signature program of The Tech Museum of Innovation invites teams of students in Grades 4-12 to use the engineering design process to solve a real-world problem. Participants spend months collaborating and becoming deeply engaged in the challenge while documenting their progress and designs. The program culminates in an exciting two-day showcase in March when teams put their solutions to the test in front of judges.

Teams are joining a rich legacy of young innovators who step up to tackle a real-world challenge in true Silicon Valley style — with hard work, ingenuity and a lot of fun. It’s easy to get started. Here are a few steps:

  1. Read the Rules and check out the Team and Adviser guides.

  2. Find a group of friends who want to be on a team (a team is 2-6 students, plus one adult Adviser).

  3. Make a calendar that includes Tech Challenge events and milestones you want your team to achieve.

  4. Register your team.

  5. Start brainstorming!

Students in Grades 4 - 12. Must be in teams of 2-6 students with one adult (18+) adviser. Students with disabilities are encouraged to participate. The registration fee is waived for Title 1 schools and recognized after-school programs.

Student teams use the engineering design process to engineer, design, build and document a solution to a real-world problem. This problem, or challenge, changes every year.

Teams bring their devices to test trials at The Tech Museum of Innovation starting in February (see Participant Events on our website for dates). Test trials are an opportunity for teams to test their solutions on competition rigs and get feedback from judges. It can be helpful to see what other teams are doing and find ideas that could lead to design improvements. Teams are encouraged to attend multiple test trials.

The Tech Challenge showcase is the program’s big finale, a weekend during which teams are interviewed by judges, demonstrate their devices on a test rig, and present their engineering journal. It is an inspiring event enjoyed by participants, advisers, family and friends!

Teams are judged in three equally-weighted areas: interview, performance and engineering journal. At each station the team will meet with two judges.

Even if a team’s device is only partially complete, team members are still encouraged to participate.
