The Tech Challenge

Ages:Elementary, Middle School, High School

Types:Submission, Performance

Category:STEM

Scope:Regional

This competition has not yet posted any deadlines.

This signature program of The Tech invites teams of students in Grades 4-12 to use the engineering design process to solve a real-world problem. Participants spend months collaborating and becoming deeply engaged in the challenge while documenting their progress and designs. The program culminates in a thrilling two-day showcase in April when teams put their solutions to the test in front of judges.

Teams must create a device to solve a challenge provided by the Tech. Teams must also keep an engineering journal describing their steps in the engineering design process. Teams are invited to participate in the Tech Challenge final event to showcase their devices and have them tested on an engineering rig.

The Tech Challenge judges will evaluate your team’s project as a whole, including your device’s performance, your engineering design process and journal, and your style and presentation. Judges also award points for teamwork, perseverance and other categories.

At the showcase, two or more judges will join you for the interview and device performance phase. This is a great chance to engage with Silicon Valley engineers.

Interview

Let your personalities shine! During the pre-performance interview, you should be prepared to:

• Discuss your roles, team dynamics, processes and experiences.

• Share how you solved problems and dealt with failure.

• Explain how and why you chose your materials and design.

• Share your engineering journal.

• Show off your creativity and style with costumes, marketing materials, videos, or other prepared presentations. (You must supply your own laptop or video player.) Prepared presentations are welcome but not required, and should take no more than 2 minutes.

Device performance

Judges will go to the test rig with you and watch your device perform.
