The American Mind—the very character of what it means to be an American—is changing. Where once “being an American” meant respecting others’ freedom of speech, colleges now dis-invite speakers who fail to affirm what student bodies already think; where once Americans cared about working hard, we now opt for temporary gigs rather than long-term jobs; where once Americans cared about informed voting, we now vote with a sports mentality, rooting for our favorites while knowing little about where they stand. This competition is meant to help change what people think it means to be an American.

To enter, either submit an essay or video in response to one of the topics given. If submitting an essay, your original essay must be between 1500 and 2000 words in length. If submitting a video, your original video must be no more than three (3) minutes in length.

  • quality of the idea presented
  • creativity
  • skill exhibited in the medium chosen for entry
    • The entry does not need to agree with the ideas expressed in the essays and videos presented.
