SCUDEM — SIMIODE Challenge Using Differential Equations Modeling is a 3-student group modeling challenge that runs over multiple days in a Challenge Period, 20 October - 13 November 2023, culminating in a student-produced 10 minute video which is reviewed by at least 3 judges, actually SCUDEM has average 8+ meaningful judges' reports per team. Teams and Coaches may meet remotely or in person. Team submissions will be judged Outstanding, Meritorious, or Successful. Outstanding team submissions will be posted at SIMIODE's YouTube site https://www.youtube.com/c/SIMIODE and all teams who submit a video will receive helpful judges' feedback (on average 8 or more judges reports) and an award certificate at the appropriate level. Teams choose one of the Challenge Problems provided in the areas of physics/engineering, chemistry/life sciences, or social sciences/humanities, and develop a model using differential or difference equations and a presentation. All past problems and Outstanding Team submissions can be seen at the SCUDEM website https://qubeshub.org/community/groups/scudem. Registration cost is $33US per student and all participating students and judges will receive a FREE copy of MathWorks MATLAB software with rich tutorials on its use for their consideration to use.

Competition Process

Student teams of three high school and/or undergraduate students will register as a team with a coach within the period 1 August 2023 through 20 October 2023. During the Challenge Period, 20 October - 13 November 2023 students prepare a ten minute video on their modeling efforts using differential equations from one of three areas physics/engineering, chemistry/life sciences, or social sciences/humanities, and develop a model using differential or difference equations and a ten-minute video presentation. Team videos are uploaded per SCUDEM instructions and judges will view, comment on, and render a score from 1 = Lo to 5 = Hi. Usually each volunteer judge will view 3-5 videos and in the past SCUDEM has provided each team with valuable feedback from on average 8+ judges. Once team level achievement, Outstanding, Meritorious, and Successful, based on judges' scorings is ascertained then teams are awarded certificates and given the anonymous judges' comments. Outstanding video teams are invited to submit their video for publication at SIMIODE's YouTube channel.

Judging Criteria

Once the student team selects the problem to work on from three offered by SCUDEM they are to spend their time developing an understanding of the nature of the modeling opportunity and background material related to the modeling situation, applying appropriate mathematics using differential equations, and embrace technology tools. Students will prepare a ten-minute video for submission in which they describe the modeling situation they worked on, develop the model in detail with motivation and rationale, and offer a presentation of their model with critiques of how it might be improved. SCUDEM will provide teams with technical details on how to upload the video for judges' viewings. Judging will be broadly based on the clear development and exposition of the model, the assumptions and rationale rendered, technical/mathematical details, and reflection on how the model can be improved. Judges are given a rubric in which teams are judged on basic modeling principles and use of differential equations to model one of three scenarios. Key components are clear statement of reasoned assumptions, identification of factors and variables, formation of a model, explanation of terms in model, solution strategies clearly displayed, consequences of model solutions, comparisons with data or reality, and suggestions for improving the model.

Managing Organization: SIMIODE

Eligibility:
Students from high school or undergraduate level may participate in teams of three with a coach. Coaches could be from faculty, industry, or colleagues. BEFORE the start of the Challenge Period coaches should work with teams to discuss specific modeling strategies, review past SCUDEM submissions, and develop a timeline, tools, and strategy for completion of model and submission video. During the Challenge Period coaches should NOT assist teams in any technical matter. Teams are on their own! This is the students' opportunity to develop and shine! In 2023 the Challenge Period is 20 October - 13 November 2023 and a comparable period is offered each autumn.
