SCUDEM — SIMIODE Challenge Using Differential Equations Modeling is a 3-student team modeling challenge that runs over multiple days (about three weeks) culminating in a 10 minute video which is reviewed by at least 3 judges – average number of judge reports recently was more than 8 per team. Teams and Coaches may meet remotely in preparation for the actual Challenge Period of about three weeks, during which teams perform on their own without animate assistance of any kind. Teams choose one of the Challenge Problems provided in the areas of (a) physics/engineering, (b) chemistry/life sciences, or (c) social sciences/humanities, and develop a model using differential or difference equations and a presentation. This is a challenge to each student participant to grow in use of modeling and mathematical skills. Team submissions will be judged Outstanding, Meritorious, or Successful. The reward is in the doing and certificates for all teams will be presented. Outstanding team videos will be posted and the most recent year’s effort can be seen at SIMIODE’s YouTube website – search YouTube SIMIODE.
In SCUDEM, teams must demonstrate good modeling principles and methods, make effective use of the mathematics of differential equations, relate their model to data or reality, communicate clearly throughout their presentation, and offer ideas for possible improvements on their model.
