Advancements in autonomous vehicle technology across all domains - air, land, and water - are moving fast in public and private sectors, including academia through research and competitions. In support of these advancements, the Maritime RobotX Challenge was created.  In 2012, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) launched the first biennial Maritime RobotX Challenge.

RobotX is RoboNation’s most complex robotic competition to-date. Through this competition, we aspire to engage regional partners around the Pacific Rim while creating a new, high-level competition focused on autonomous surface vehicle platforms and sensors.

RobotX is a part of RoboNation, a robotics community built to represent the force behind the next generation of builders, creators and engineers.  By offering a wide range of educational and interactive opportunities, like RobotX, RoboNation reaches all levels of robotics enthusiasts. RoboNation was created by the AUVSI Foundation, a nonprofit, charitable organization established to support the educational initiatives of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI).

Students use a standard robotic boat chassis to build, engineer, and race their boat through a series of tasks. Teams must also document their process through a website and series of documents that are scored.
