From October 29th to 31st, the Plant the Moon Challenge will connect with young leaders from around the world at the World Food Prize Foundation’s Global Youth Institute. This exciting collaboration highlights how cutting-edge research in space agriculture can inspire sustainable food systems on Earth and beyond!

The Plant the Moon Challenge engages student scientists in experiments designed to grow crops in simulated lunar and Martian regolith. Through hands-on research, participants investigate the challenges of farming in harsh environments, producing valuable knowledge relevant not only for space exploration but also for improving agricultural sustainability on Earth.

 

Global Youth Institute: A Hub for Future Food Security Leaders 

The World Food Prize Global Youth Institute is a prestigious academic conference dedicated to solving the world’s most pressing food security challenges. Each year, it brings together over 175 students and their mentors from across the globe. Participants present their original research on global food security, interact with international experts, and explore topics such as agricultural innovation and sustainable food systems.

This year, for the first time, the Global Youth Institute will extend its discussions into the realm of space-based agricultural research, thanks to the collaboration with the Plant the Moon Challenge. The addition of these sessions reflects a growing interest in using space research to address food production challenges on Earth, such as climate change, soil degradation, and water scarcity.

 

New Frontiers: Space Agriculture for a Sustainable Future 

As part of this collaboration, participants will have the opportunity to meet astronauts and explore connections between space food systems and Earth-based agriculture. Workshops organized by the Plant the Moon Challenge will allow students to work directly with simulated lunar and Martian regolith, helping them understand how vegetables could be grown for long-duration space missions—an essential step for future exploration of the Moon and Mars.

These hands-on workshops will demonstrate the unique difficulties of growing crops in nutrient-poor soil, and encourage students to think creatively about sustainable solutions for food production. Lessons learned from space agriculture can also translate into real-world applications, offering insights for improving crop production in areas with depleted soil and resources.

Students participating in the Global Youth Institute are selected through Youth Institutes hosted around the world and virtually. These local programs provide young people with opportunities to dive into food security challenges and prepare them for presenting their ideas on a global stage.
