Although the end of the calendar year is near and many schools are getting ready to close up for the winter holidays, the world of academic competitions is in full swing! Many competitions have their early qualifying rounds going throughout the fall semester. Particularly, many of the large national competitions with multiple local, regional, and national competitions have moved through those initial rounds as they prepare for regional and national competitions in the new year.

However, there are still many competitions with registration or submission deadlines coming up in the new year. So if you haven’t filled your plate with enough academic competitions to satisfy your intellectual hunger, here is a short review of some of the great competitions that you can still join in on to quench that thirst.

 

The Diamond Challenge – an entrepreneurship competition for high school students. Registration due January 8, 2020.

C-Span’s Student Cam – create videos supporting or opposing a recent political issue. Due January 20, 2020.

Courageous Persuaders – video competition for high school students. Due January 31, 2020.

Engineer Girl Essay Contest – students write about engineering and its impact on the world. Due February 1, 2020.

Make Time to Sleep – high school video contest, open until February 7, 2020.

AoCMM Math Modeling Competition – middle and high school math competition to model solutions to complex problems, next competition is February, 2020.

Center for Unsung Heroes Discovery Award – compete for awards recognizing inspiring youth projects. Applications due February 15, 2020.

Mathworks Math Modeling Challenge – an Internet-based applied math competition for high school juniors and seniors. Due February 21, 2020.

AAPT High School Physics Bowl – best photos of physical phenomena. Registration due February 24, 2020.

Canadian Computing Competition – open to schools across North America. Registration deadlines in February and March for different levels.

Genius Olympiad – an international high school project competition about environmental issues. Registration Due March 1, 2020.

DNA Day Essay Contest – students to examine, question, and reflect on important concepts in genetics. Due March 4, 2020.

ASA Data Visualization Poster Contest – an opportunity for students of all K-12 levels to learn about data visualization. Posters due April 1, 2020.

ASME IAM3D Challenge – innovative undergraduate student opportunity to compete for 3D manufacturing designs. Due December 28, 2019.

American Foreign Service National High School Essay Contest – write essays about resolving an international crisis. Due April 6, 2020.

Harlan Institute Consource Virtual Supreme Court – debate the issues like the supreme court does, registration due April 30, 2020.

Ayn Rand Essay Contests – several contests for writing about Ayn Rand’s novels and philosophy. Due between April and May, 2020

American Regions Math League – compete on teams for advance mathematics exams. Competition Date, May 29 – 30, 2020.
